Information

Esteemed Colleagues,

I would like to start by saying that I am honored to be serving as the new CMEA State Band and Orchestra Festival Coordinator. I am eager to continue the work that my predecessors have begun. I would like to thank our outgoing State Band and Orchestra Festival Coordinator, Jim Mazzaferro, for all of his hard work and contributions these past three years and for being so incredibly helpful during my transition into this new position. Thanks, Jim!

Over the past four years the State Band and Orchestra Festival has seen substantial growth and the work will continue to make this festival the premier festival for the state’s highest-level ensembles. I am happy to announce that this school year the festival will once again be held at the beautiful Mondavi Center on the campus of UC Davis on Friday, May 12, 2017.

Performing in a great venue like the Mondavi Center is an amazing experience for students. Having the opportunity to performance in this venue with an educated audience is another important aspect of the State Band and Orchestra that we hope to strengthen this year. For the 2017 festival, participating ensembles will be scheduled into a block and required to stay and serve as an audience for other groups performing. This important change will help ensure that all of the participating groups have an appreciative audience to perform for. Every effort will be made to accommodate scheduling requests for morning or afternoon performances and we will make sure that there are a variety of ensembles within each block (i.e. a high school orchestra will not be blocked with three middle school bands).

This change is not intended to detract potential applicants but rather, encourage more (and new) schools to apply. There can be no greater feeling than being selected to perform with some of our state’s best ensembles, in a first-class venue, with large audience of appreciative musicians!

The application process will remain the same as in pervious years. Participating groups must have received a Unanimous Superior rating at a CMEA sanctioned festival during Spring Semester 2016. CMEA sanctioned festivals include festivals hosted by CMEA Sections and SCSBOA. An application and a recording of your ensemble performing approximately 20 minutes of music must be submitted by November 15, 2016. Information on submitting applications and instructions are located on the CMEA website.

I highly encourage those of you that have not attended the festival in the past to apply this year and hope that those of you that have attended in the past will consider applying again this year. I especially encourage high school directors to apply! I know that May is a crazy time of year and our students are neck deep in AP tests and finals during that time of year, however, I feel the experience is well worthwhile for your students.

I am looking forward to receiving your applications!
