The School

The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) is located on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) and was founded in 1985 to be a free public high school providing specialized arts instruction to highly talented and diverse students. Applicants come from 80 school districts throughout the entirety of Los Angeles County, and are admitted by audition. LACHSA opened in 1985 and presently serves as a launching pad for 550 world-class artistically talented 9th through 12th graders. LACHSA is consistently the highest-ranked public arts high school in the United States. (https://www.niche.com/k12/search/best-schools-for-the-arts/) Each year, the school garners some of the top arts recognitions in the county, state, and country (e.g. Monterey Jazz Festival, Spotlight Award, Presidential Scholars Award, etc.). In 2019, more YoungArts semifinalists were from LACHSA than any other school, and three were chosen as national finalists.

The Position

They will create opportunities for students to present their work in LA communities and high-profile events, and to work with non-profit arts providers in developing programing and recruiting “pipelines” for prospective LACHSA students. While continuing to curate performances in the European classical and jazz traditions, the ideal candidate will work to incorporate an inclusive selection of music from contemporary and world music sources. The selected candidate will provide visionary leadership in the development and expansion of the music program. They will develop music curriculum, monitor budgets, hire, supervise and evaluate non-credentialed teaching artists, communicate with parents, and collaborate with university staff.
