CMEA State Virtual Spring Festival
Registration is now closed.
A virtual performance and critique opportunity for any and all of the music performance audio and video recordings your students are creating during this challenging time.
- Festival open to any school solo or ensemble, regardless of size or instrumentation: band, choir, orchestra, jazz, rock/pop band, mariachi, steel drum, hand bells or any instrument or vocal ensemble. All are welcome!
- Audio and video engineering can be done by students, teachers, and/or professionals: You explain your recording and editing process in the registration form.
- Any/all styles of music are welcome.
- Multi-tracking and/or using electronic accompaniments are allowed.
- In person, small cohorts, or at home distance learning recordings.
- All ensemble entries will receive judges comments from highly qualified judges with expertise in the category of your submission.
- All solo entries will be provided comments and a rating, if desired. Students performing solos who receive a superior rating, will be invited to participate in the CMEA State Virtual Solo Festival taking place in April and May of 2021.
- Entries can be audio only or audio/video submissions.
- Because of the nature of submitting videos, a media release form will need to be signed by each parent/guardian and collected by the director. We will provide the media release form once you are registered.
Dates and Submission Details:
Registration closes on March 1, 2021. The video submission deadline is March 15, 2021. Once you are registered, you will be sent specific information for submitting your performance video and music. Performances will be evaluated by an adjudicator between March 16-31, 2021. Results will be communicated to participants by April 3, 2021.
Registration Fees:
Solo Registration / Active Member: $40.00 per solo
Solo Registration / Non-Member: $50.00 per solo
Ensemble Registration / Active Member: $80 per ensemble
Ensemble Registration / Non-Member: $100 per ensemble
Video Submission Guidelines
- The festival is open to California music students, elementary-high school.
- Each entry should perform a minimum of one piece of music (or improvisation).
- Performances should not exceed 10 minutes in length but there is no minimum length!
- Each entry will receive feedback from the expert adjudicators, regarding your performance. Solos will receive feedback from one adjudicator. Ensembles will receive feedback from two adjudicators.
- All feedback will be provided electronically.
- Your recording will only be shared with the assigned expert adjudicator(s).
- Your personal contact information will not be shared with anyone.
- At the end of the festival, your video and music will be deleted from the server.
- Solos – You may perform your piece, as a solo, with or without piano accompaniment
- Solos – Due to copyright laws, you are required to show your purchased music at the beginning of your video, prior to your introduction and performance.
- Solos – Introduction: At the start of the video recording, please state your first name and age, only, as well as the title of the piece you are performing.
- Solos will receive a rating, if requested.
- Solos – Your video recording needs to be from a mobile phone or other device in a single recording; no editing
- Solos – Medals will be available for sale online after the festival closes.
- Ensembles – Ensemble entries will be provided a Class and Video/Recording Profile Questionnaire to complete and submit with their video submission.
- Ensembles – Due to copyright laws, the director is required to submit proof that they have purchased the sheet music for the submitted performance. More information will be provided soon.
- File format guidelines will be provided soon. We are finalizing this information with the platform designer.

Schedules will be posted here for each venue at least one week prior to the event. Schedules are sorted by school or private studio name.
Schedules can be viewed by clicking the links below. Please understand that every effort is made to accommodate your requests, but sometimes it is not possible. The schedule for staff accompanists at all of the festivals is very full this year and alterations to the schedule will not be possible. Thank you for your understanding.
