The Music Department at Occidental College seeks an experienced, dynamic, and collaborative musician, teacher, and leader to serve as the part-time non-tenure-track Director of the Occidental College Jazz Ensemble and Combo.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALS
In addition to conducting Jazz Ensemble, the Director will coach the Jazz Combo, a chamber jazz group that is a subset of the Jazz Ensemble. The teaching, preparation time, and other duties would not exceed 10 hours per week. This person will report directly to the Director of Instrumental Activities, working with him, the Director of Choral & Vocal Activities, and the Admissions Office on recruiting and retaining talented student jazz musicians seeking to obtain a liberal arts education. This person will be expected to engage and invest in our student body while furthering the values and mission of the Music Department and the College.
A broad knowledge of jazz repertoire for large and small ensembles
A Masters of Music in instrumental performance, conducting, or a jazz studies cognate OR a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts in one of the above fields combined with considerable relevant professional experience
A demonstrated record of working successfully with student musicians and in creating an inclusive ensemble rehearsal environment
A willingness to collaborate with departmental colleagues
An understanding of teaching music at a liberal arts college
