POSITION SUMMARY

Develop and implement an elementary general music program to build the musical knowledge, skills and talents of participating students. Help them discover and develop talents in the field of music. This is an itinerant position and will involve performances. Performance ensembles may include: choir, band, strings, mariachi, and drumline. Our program continues to grow and is flexible based on instructor’s strengths.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  1. Develop performance objectives and relevant, sequential lesson plans that challenge students and are also consistent with VAPA standards.
  2. Include concepts of rhythm, pitch, tone, melody, harmony, notation, etc. Develop skills in listening to and reading music.
  3. Teach music as a universal language and its interrelationship in the various cultural societies of the world.
  4. Use current techniques from Orff, Kodaly, Boomwhackers, etc.
  5. Determine musical materials designed to achieve goals and performance objectives.
  6. Select a variety of music and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity levels of students.
  7. Provide a suitable learning environment conducive to the development of the student concept of self and positive attitudes towards music.
  8. Purchase music and equipment suitable for musical development.
  9. Maintain inventory of music and equipment for the program.
  10. Develop performance schedule for district-wide choir (at least one performance per semester).
  11. Communicate on a regular basis with parents, classroom teachers, principals and district administration.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Single Subject Teaching Credential.
  2. Minimum BA in Music Education.
  3. Demonstrates positive experience as a performer in and/or as a director of music productions.
  4. English Learner Certification.
