Music Teacher Position Summary:

PS1 is a K-6 independent elementary school located in Santa Monica. We are a collaborative community where teachers work to teach, advise, supervise, and care for the whole child in multi-age classrooms. We are seeking a talented, flexible, and creative individual who has a passion for teaching music in an elementary setting. This is a full-time position and is eligible for benefits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to, the following):

  • Designing a sequential and comprehensive music curriculum for mixed grade-level classes (Kindergarten through sixth-grade) that is relevant to classroom curriculum and in collaboration with classroom teachers; including some or all of the following – performance, theory, music appreciation, rhythm, drama, movement, singing, musical instruments, composition, and thematic instruction
  • Teaching a variety of classroom instruments including xylophone, ukulele, guitar, recorder, and autoharp
  • Working to generate new projects and direction for an inclusive and diverse school community in the area of music and musical performance
  • Supporting teachers with class and cluster level circle time performances
  • Preparing Holiday Concert, Spring Concert, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, Open House, and other events throughout the year for all grades
  • Hosting school gatherings, setting the tone for the school community through music
  • Supporting teachers in preparing and performing Shakespeare or other theatrical production in the fifth and sixth grade
  • Directing mixed grade choirs
  • Assessing student progress
  • Participating in school events (including but not limited to Curriculum Night and parent conferences, Admissions events, Open House, field trips
  • Attending faculty orientation week, weekly faculty/staff meetings, and end of the year professional development week
  • Participating on committees within the school
  • Supporting the mission of PS1
  • Communicating overview and highlights of Music curriculum through monthly parent newsletters
  • Other duties as assigned in partnership with the Director of Teaching & Learning, Head of School, or designee

Experience and Qualifications:

We seek candidates who have experience working in a progressive, child-centered model.

A familiarity with many ways of approaching music education, and a willingness to develop one’s own curricular materials are important. Other qualities include effective classroom management skills, a good sense of humor, strong organization skills, flexibility, self-motivation, and confidence. A PS1 teacher needs to be a team player who exhibits a sense of stewardship in the work setting.

Candidates should have at least three years of experience teaching music, ideally at the elementary school level. Orff certification and experience are preferable. Creativity, honesty, a caring nature, and a willingness to seek continuing education in the field are additional qualities that we seek. Possessing a background in performance is crucial, and proficiency in vocal and instrumental music is highly desirable. A Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree preferred.
